End-Stage Renal Disease

Living With & Understanding End-Stage Renal Disease

End-stage renal disease, also known as kidney failure or end-stage kidney disease, occurs when chronic kidney disease — the gradual loss of kidney function — reaches an advanced stage. End-stage renal disease occurs when your kidneys no longer function properly to meet your body's needs.

Wastes and excess fluids in your blood are filtered by your kidneys and excreted in your urine. When your kidneys' filtering abilities fail, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes can accumulate in your body. With excellent standing with the transplant committee and fully tenured staff, we are confident that we can help you understand the necessary steps for the best quality of life when living with end-stage renal disease. How we Determine End-Stage Renal Disease

Our dedicated providers will ask you about your family and medical history to diagnose end-stage renal disease. Physical exams, as well as other tests, will be performed. Here are some things to expect during the diagnostic process that will help us determine the best path for your care.

Blood tests are used to determine the amount of waste products in your blood, such as creatinine and urea.

Urine tests are used to determine the amount of the protein albumin in your urine.

Ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan imaging tests to evaluate your kidneys and look for unusual areas

Taking a sample of kidney tissue (biopsy) allows us to examine your kidney tissue under a microscope to determine the type of kidney disease and the damage.

Certain tests may be repeated over time to assist your provider in tracking the progression of your kidney disease. Call our dedicated and compassionate team at (803) 648-0718 today to discuss your next steps.
